At the edge of perception, in the realm of peripheral vision, the last color that our eyes can grasp is yellow — and among its shades, lemon, a cool yellow with a hint of green, occupies a special place. As the last intense color accord, it precedes the calm zone of achromatic colors.
However, if we direct our gaze to the centre of the picture and confront lemon with grey, a subtle dialogue begins. The seemingly neutral grey brings out the fullness of yellow by intensifying its tone, while it itself takes on a delicate purple hue — an echo of the phenomenon known as simultaneous contrast.

In the light dimension, the interplay is just as pronounced: lemon yellow, surrounded by grey, appears brighter, more luminous, while grey becomes deeper, heavier, almost denser. This subtle and fleeting change in tone gives the composition the feeling that it is breathing — an inhalation of light and an exhalation of shadow. This juxtaposition is like a conversation between two friends, where one speaks passionately and the other makes every word seem even more important.
