At the edge of perception, in the realm of peripheral vision, the last color that our eyes can grasp is yellow – and among its shades, citrate, a cool yellow with a hint of green, occupies a special place. As the last, intense color chord, it stands in front of the calm zone of achromatic hues. However, if we turn our gaze to the center of the picture and confront citrate with grey, a subtle dialogue begins. The seemingly neutral grey brings out the fullness of the yellow and intensifies its tone, while itself taking on a delicate violet hue – echoes of the phenomenon known as simultaneous contrast.
The interplay is just as pronounced in the dimension of light: Citrate, surrounded by grey, appears even brighter and more luminous, while grey becomes deeper, heavier and denser. This subtle and fleeting shift in colour tone gives the composition the impression of breathing in light and breathing out shadow. This juxtaposition is like a conversation between two friends- one speaks passionately, the other makes every word seem even more important.
