At the opposite ends of the color wheel are orange and blue – complementary colors which, when combined, take on an extraordinary intensity. In a composition dominated by deep blue, in which orange accents appear like points of light, the borders of the two colors vibrate and shimmer as if they were glowing against the night sky.
This phenomenon is called color shimmer. Orange is produced in the eye by the simultaneous activity of red- and green-sensitive cones, while the blue receptor remains inactive. In contrast, blue concentrates the activity of this third receptor and becomes the dominant color in the composition.
This combination fully engages the viewer's vision – all three channels of color perception are activated and the eye is invited into a subtle interplay of contrasts and shimmering transitions. The painting not only depicts colors, but also becomes a space for their coexistence, in which seeing becomes an experience.
