Despite the great affection people have for raccoons, they are legally classified as an invasive species. They are safe only within sanctuaries, housed in secure enclosures under the appropriate legal permits. In the wild, they can be killed without special authorisation.
The photograph presents a close-up of the eye of one of eight raccoons living in a dedicated sanctuary. Every weekend, crowds of curious visitors and admirers of these animals arrive, bringing treats and taking pleasure in observing them and spending time in their presence.
The raccoons respond to this affection with trust, looking towards their visitors, unaware of the dangers that exist beyond the sanctuary walls.
Yet a striking contradiction remains. While photographs and videos featuring raccoons attract enormous attention and affection online, these same animals continue to be killed in the wild, where they are regarded as a threat to native species.
